Stupid Is as Stupid Does

November 30th, 2008 · 6 Comments

So everything was going great after my recent foot surgery. The incision healed up nicely, my foot felt great and it seemed my foot problems (beginning with Morton’s Neuroma and then an infection that caused a second surgery) were behind me. I figured I’d be back running by New Year’s, if not sooner.
Southern California had [...]

Vatican should save its apology

November 26th, 2008 · 3 Comments

This recently in from Reuters:
The Vatican’s newspaper has finally forgiven John Lennon for declaring that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, calling the remark a “boast” by a young man grappling with sudden fame.
Ah, how out of touch are Vatican officials? John Lennon — who’s been dead for more than 25 years — [...]

Live from LA, it’s William Lobdell!

November 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Before I left the Los Angeles Times, I worked on a video feature called “Living Vicariously in LA.” Each week, I did a different iconic job in the Southland, and produced a short video about it. The feature only ran for six episodes before I left the paper. But you can view all them here. [...]

The Beauty of Honesty

November 25th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Most of us are good liars — in large and small ways, in words and deeds. We put up a facade so family, friends and strangers don’t see the real us. When people ask, “How’s it going?”, we always reply, “Great!” We think the truth about ourselves is ugly. So we hide it.
And there’s the [...]

Why Ironman is an addiction

November 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I’ve done one Ironman in November 2006, and plan to compete in Ironman Cozumel during the 2009 Thanksgiving weekend (I was scheduled to do Ironman Arizona Sunday, but got knocked out because of my foot surgery). If you want to know what’s so special about an Ironman, this race report for famed blogger Trimama will [...]

Book jacket copy is finished

November 23rd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Here’s the copy that will appear on the flaps of the book jacket for “Losing My Religion.”
William Lobdell’s journey of faith—and doubt—may be the most compelling spiritual memoir of our time. Lobdell became a born-again Christian in his late 20s when personal problems—including a failed marriage—drove him to his knees in prayer. As a newly [...]

My new favorite religious site

November 23rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

My old favorite religious website was Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which promotes the worship of a Flying Spaghetti Monster and whose followers are called Pastafarians. The satirical site is clever, funny, and insightful. It’s a little like The Onion for religion. This is the review of the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, [...]

Book tour heating up!

November 20th, 2008 · 4 Comments

The first legs of the book tour are starting to take shape. So far, it looks like we’ll be in LA, OC, Palo Alto, Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, North Carolina, Washington D.C., New York and Boston. Probably in late February and March. Pretty cool, yes?
More details to come.

The 4-1-1 on “24″

November 19th, 2008 · No Comments

I’m a HUGE fan of “24″ — and Fox has produced a two-hour movie that bridges the 6th and 7th season (great idea, btw). Can’t wait. It will air on Sunday at 8 p.m. — 7 p.m. Central Time  (I’ve always wanted to say that).
The writers’ strike caused a year-long delay in us getting our [...]

Finally, a sermon to live by

November 14th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I’m wondering if this is the pastor’s very clever way of having sex with his wife for seven straight days — kind of like Joseph Smith informing his wife that God had ordered him to take multiple wives. Whatever the case, I wish my wife was a member of his congregation.
DALLAS (AP) — The pastor [...]
