I find your story fascinating because in your life you’ve apparently felt the most sublime of Christian feelings, and then the most clinical of skeptical feelings. I’m agnostic, mostly atheist, but I think some of my Christian friends would (lovingly) dismiss my feelings, saying it’s because I haven’t known Jesus in my heart, or something similar.

If a friend or your child said to you that they were unsure of their beliefs, and they told you they were going to the type of religious retreat you attended that started your Christian belief in 1989, would you warn them away?

I can’t quite get a reading on whether you’re saying that belief in God is a problem because it lays a person open to the abuses you’ve seen in religion.

Thank you, Bill. All the best to you in your search and work.
