Great cover, Bill. Congratulations on your upcoming book!
I will be looking forward to your upcoming book signing sometime in 2009 at Powell’s Book, in Portland, OR
I was interviewed by Bill at the first Ex-Mormon General conference held in Salt Lake City, UT in October 2001 for an article he wrote, published in LA Times, Dec 1, 2001 “Losing Faith and Lots More”: http://www.skeptictank.org/gen4/gen02324.htm.
I was impressed by Bill’s sincerity and desire to capture the essence of what he was witnessing in early October 2001 as the small emergent flock of Exmormons carved out a piece of history in the backyard of Mormonism; “The Fastest Growing Church in the World.”
I too lost my faith and became an atheist after a lengthy period of agonizing and earnest soul searching. After leaving my church of 38 years I gradually discovered there was nothing to replace the searing and demanding faith of Mormonism, to which I once so closely and fiercing clung.
After wandering in the wilderness for several years, I came to the conclusion that I am an atheist. It’s been a lonely journey. But I am unable to hide from the fact that I, like Bill, am an atheist.
I read with intense interest Bill’s LA Times story about his loss of faith during his work covering religion. I stumbled on it accidentally, while surfing the web one lazy, rainy weekend in Portland, OR. The story certainly struck a chord in me and I dashed off an email to Bill to touch base and say hi.
Best of luck to you Bill. I will be watching for the book and will be spreading “the word” :).
I’ll look forward to reading your book. You might want to check out my book in the meantime. We’re in this together. I think believers are on the run now.
"Losing My Religion: How I Lost My Faith Reporting on Religion in America" will be in bookstores February 2009 (we'll have the cover up soon). The memoir, published by HarperCollins, is about Los Angeles Times journalist William Lobdell's spiritual journey while covering religion in America, which took him from evangelical Christian to someone who, reluctantly, no longer believed in God.

Excerpts from "Losing My Religion"
"I began to live a duel life. By day, I investigated the local dioceses, dug up documents in courthouses, talked with a seemingly endless string of victims, and interviewed bishops, their aides, attorneys and priests. In my off-hours, I put in my final months of training to become a Catholic ..."

God is a concept by which we measure our pain.
